Below is the feed that is generated by this page. It consists of a simple datestamp everytime this page is edited. When it is, a new entry is saved in xml format, and dsiplayed back onto this page. In this case it is mostly useless, except you get to see when i last added content. RSS has many more powerful uses than this! =)

RSS^

Have you ever seen one of these image or these image while viewing a webpage and clicked on it only to see (to your horror) a screen of seemingly unintelligible code appear before your eyes? Quickly you rush to the BACK button before someone figures out that you have broken the internet. Well fret no longer, what you have here is an RSS primer, which will introduce you to the world of RSS or Really Simple Syndication. (alternately Rich Site Summary)

RSS is a standard for publishing regular updates to web-based content^

The fact is, although these brightly colored orange boxes dont always match the look and feel of the site, they do signify some very special properties about the page you are viewing. Most importantly the fact that you the user, have the ability to subscribe to the page. Why in the heck would I subscribe to a web page? you may be thinking. Well, in the last couple of years we have seen an unbelievable growth in the number of sources available on line for news, tips, and general information that you want to keep track of. As a consequence, it has become increasingly difficult to stay current on all of them. There was a day when users were forced to click through our bookmarks(favorites), one at a time, visiting each page we were interested in, remembering the last time we visited the site to gauge if its worth the time to check in for new content. Those times are long gone, and if you do still use the web this way, it may be time for you to consider getting an aggregator.

Aggregators^

Aggregators or Readers are where the magic happens. It is hard to truly appreciate the benefits of the RSS standard until you have experienced it working for you, and using an RSS Reader of one kind or another is the only way to do this. There are many ways this can be accomplished. You can download a client side application, join a web based feed service, save feeds in your browser, or set up your web pages to display one or many feeds. There are many services to choose from and more all the time. Lets go over the popular ones.

Browser-based tools
Firefox uses something called "Live Bookmarks" to save sites with rss feeds and display the feed right in the browsers menu.
